Did you know that suicide is one of the leading causes of preventable death in our nation today? We lose an average of more than 125 young people each week to this tragedy that can be prevented (jasonfoundation.com). According to the CDC, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for our youth ages 10-24, and more teens and adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.
It’s important to know that resources are available and to be knowledgeable on how to respond if you know someone who is showing signs of suicidal ideation. The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth and young adult suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth. Linked below are a few of their helpful resources:

Suicide does not typically have a sudden onset. A number of stressors can contribute to a youth’s anxiety and unhappiness, increasing the possibility of a suicide attempt.
Remember: Never be reluctant to get involved and always take any child/adolescent’s desire or intent to harm themselves seriously. If you suspect a young person of suicidal ideation, get them to professional help immediately. Suicide is Preventable.
