Introduction
Pea Ridge Softball has been known for their tough, disciplined, well coached players in the past and in the present. It wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t have the 14 year head coach, Josh Reynolds. As Reynolds is approaching a new softball season coming towards the end of the month, and the Pea ridge community is really looking forward to seeing what great things this team has to offer! The 23’-24’ Blackhawk Softball team has a total of 5 senior players, the rest being Juniors or sophomores. There is one specific senior team captain who has a great impact on her team and the game of softball and her name is Rebekah Konkler! In a recent interview with the senior who has been in the school district since the 6th grade, she explains her team goals and certain ways that she is a leader on and off the softball field!
Inside The Diamond
Konkler prides herself in being a good sport as she says, she wants to make sure she has a positive attitude for her younger teammates or peers.
“I am definitely a leader by both talk and example. I always try to demonstrate good sportsmanship, work ethic, and a positive attitude in hopes that they will do the same,” says Rebekah.
“If they are doing something wrong at practice, I try to help them do it the right way by showing them what they did, and then showing them how to fix it. I do this in a positive and encouraging tone just to let them know I can help!”
While any sport focuses on good communication, Rebekah and her team make sure they communicate effectively on everything they do.
“Our team has a major focus on communication on and off the field. Whether it’s calling a fly ball, talking about who is covering the bases on a bunt, or letting the coach know you’re gonna miss practice or be late”, says Rebekah.
“We practice communication a lot but there is also communication that can’t be practiced like cheering on your teammates and motivating them.”
Goals are an important part in growing, when you set clear and achievable goals, it provides direction, purpose, and motivation. Konkler has set a high standard for herself coming into the new softball season.
“As a player my goal is to have a batting average above .300 and a fielding percentage above .850. As a team I hope we can make it to the State Tournament and make history by winning the State Championship!”, she says.
“I definitely hope that by having good sportsmanship, work ethic, and a positive attitude other people will follow that,” says Konkler.
